Old Hampden Utility Improvements

Project Overview

Old Hampden is in need of some love, both above and below ground. This street and its aging underground water and stormwater pipelines run directly through the Wellness District of Downtown Englewood, serving Craig Hospital, Swedish Medical Center, nearby businesses and residents, office workers, and visitors with its assortment of retail stores and restaurants. Upgrading old infrastructure and enhancing public safety, accessibility and options for getting around the Old Hampden area have been key priorities for the City of Englewood and the Englewood Downtown Development Authority, as outlined through the city’s master planning process.

The Old Hampden Utility Improvements project is necessary to replace small, old 1950s-era water and stormwater pipes, manholes and infrastructure that are well past their useful life. It will prevent future water line breaks and storm-related flooding for the entire community.

The timing of each phase of the project is based on when funding is available and when contracting is finalized. To help reduce the cost of these critical infrastructure projects and limit construction-related disruptions, Englewood Utilities is working to replace the stormwater and water lines at approximately the same time.

Utility Project Phases

Phase 1: Completed January 2025 - March 2026. The first phase of stormwater system upgrades and all the water line construction was completed, with stormwater construction between South Emerson St. through S Logan St. and water line work along the entire Old Hampden Ave. corridor.

Phase 2: Scheduled from mid - August into October 2026 (six to eight weeks). Englewood Utilities is upgrading the next section of Old Hampden’s stormwater infrastructure between Grant and Lincoln streets – to the west of Swedish Medical Center. Continuation of this project is needed to reduce flooding and improve the capacity of the stormwater system. This phase of construction will be much shorter than the previous work. Phase 3: Planned for fall 2026, for up to three weeks. The final phase of the stormwater improvements project in this area is planned for this fall. It will temporarily close the south end of Lincoln Street adjacent to Little Dry Creek, while keeping Old Hampden partially open east-west.

Old Hampden Aug-Oct 2026 Construction: What To Expect

Construction hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m

Project Duration: About six to eight weeks.

Impacts:

• Some large equipment and excavations, as well as potential noise and dust during construction hours. Crews will work to minimize impacts as much as possible.
• No direct access to any property is expected to be cut off.
• We are communicating directly with neighbors and businesses in the area and will provide updates online here as well.

Street Closure Info:

• Old Hampden: Closed to traffic between Grant and Lincoln until project completion.
• Sherman Street/Old Hampden intersection: Closed until project completion.
• Lincoln/Hampden intersection: Closed until project completion.
• Grant/Hampden intersection: Closed until project completion.
• Logan/Hampden intersection: Open to north/south traffic.
