Project Description

The City of Englewood has awarded a construction contract to Jalisco International to widen and rehabilitate the Dartmouth Avenue bridge over the South Platte River. The bridge will be widened approximately fifteen feet to accommodate an additional drive lane and include a new five foot wide sidewalk on the south side. Roadway surface improvements will include an asphalt mill and overlay of Dartmouth Avenue from Santa Fe to S Platte River Drive. Intersection improvements including new traffic signals will be completed on both sides of the widened bridge. Construction phasing will be utilized to keep two lanes of traffic open during the life of the project. Phase 1 will have two lanes of traffic open on the south side of the bridge while the north side of the bridge deck is replaced. Phase 2 will open one lane of traffic on the north side of the bridge and one lane of traffic on the south side of the bridge while the middle of the bridge deck is replaced. The final phases will have traffic on the north side of the bridge while the south side of the bridge deck is replaced, and the structure is widened.

Timeline

Construction of the project began in May 2023 and is scheduled to end in summer 2024.

Project Updates

December 2023:
Dartmouth traffic has now been phased to the north side of the bridge while crews remove the deck on the south lane. While the deck is being removed crews will construct new piers and extensions to each abutment to accommodate three new girders on the south side which will widen the bridge by fifteen feet. After the new substructure units are constructed and girders are set, the final phase to the deck will be poured. Localized lane closures can be expected over the next couple months while Xcel transitions overhead powerlines to underground and crews work to replace sidewalks on all corners of the bridge.

Road Closures

4/25/24 Update:

East S. Platte River Drive will be closed in both directions just south of Dartmouth Avenue from Monday, April 29 to Wednesday, May 1 to assemble a crane for the Dartmouth Bridge Widening Project.

This project is set to be completed later this year and will help with traffic safety and congestion in the area.

3/27/24 Update:
Dartmouth Bridge will be closed starting Friday, March 29 at 8 a.m. until at least Wednesday, April 3 to complete a concrete deck pour. Avoid the area if possible, take an alternate route or use the detour south to Hamilton Place.

3/20/24 Update:
Westbound lanes across Dartmouth Bridge will be closed on March 20, 21 and 25.

2/26/24 Update:
Westbound lanes across Dartmouth Bridge will be closed starting tomorrow, February 27 until at least Friday, March 1.

1/23/24 Update:
Dartmouth Bridge will be closed starting today, January 23 to at least Friday, January 26. Avoid the area if possible, take an alternate route or use the detour south to Hamilton Place.

12/14/23 Update:
The Dartmouth Bridge will be closed December 15, to switch traffic over to both lanes on the north side of the bridge. Construction crews will then remove the deck on the south side of the bridge, add additional piers and girders, and finally a new deck.

12/12/23 Update:
The Dartmouth Bridge will be closed until at least the evening of Thursday the 14 (weather permitting) in order to change traffic configurations to the final phase of construction on the bridge.

12/6/23 Update:
The Dartmouth Bridge will be closed in both directions for five days (weather permitting) beginning Thursday, December 7. Crews will be pouring the middle portion of the deck, and the deck needs at least five days with no traffic on the adjacent lanes to cure properly.

12/5/23 Update:
Westbound Dartmouth Avenue across the bridge will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, December 6 to do a survey before the next bridge pour. The contractor is currently replacing the median on the east side of the bridge, which will be finished around December 15.

11/17/23 Update:
Westbound Dartmouth Avenue across the bridge will be closed Saturday, November 18, in order to finish work on the utility hanger on the north side of the bridge before Thanksgiving break.

11/16/23 Update:
Westbound Dartmouth Avenue across the bridge will be closed until Friday, November 17 and next Monday, November 20 through Wednesday, November 22 while crews install final pieces of the utility hanger to the north side of the bridge.

8/30/23 Update:
The Dartmouth Avenue Bridge will be closed on Friday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 5. The bridge will be reopened at the end of each day. The contractor will be pouring the bridge barrier and space on the bridge is needed for equipment to prepare for the pour on Friday and execute the pour on Tuesday.

8/18/23 Update:
The Dartmouth Bridge closure has been delayed. The bridge will now be closed from Wednesday, August 23 to Sunday, August 27. The contractor will be pouring new concrete on the north half of the deck. Traffic on the bridge vibrates the deck such that the concrete would not cure properly, so the bridge will be closed during the bridge deck pour, and for enough time to allow the concrete to cure properly.

10/17/23 Update:
Dartmouth Avenue will be closed in both directions for construction of the bridge on Thursday, October 19 through midday Friday, October 20. New traffic patterns will be installed, and traffic will continue Friday afternoon using the northernmost lane for westbound traffic and the southernmost lane for eastbound traffic. This traffic pattern will be utilized throughout the weekend.

On Monday, October 23, the westbound lane of traffic will be closed during the week for up to three weeks while crews install a utility bridge on the north side of Dartmouth Bridge. Demolition and construction will commence on the middle portion of the bridge while the utility bridge is being installed.
