Project Description
The City of Englewood has awarded a construction contract to Jalisco International to widen and rehabilitate the Dartmouth Avenue bridge over the South Platte River. The bridge will be widened approximately fifteen feet to accommodate an additional drive lane and include a new five foot wide sidewalk on the south side. Roadway surface improvements will include an asphalt mill and overlay of Dartmouth Avenue from Santa Fe to S Platte River Drive. Intersection improvements including new traffic signals will be completed on both sides of the widened bridge. Construction phasing will be utilized to keep two lanes of traffic open during the life of the project. Phase 1 will have two lanes of traffic open on the south side of the bridge while the north side of the bridge deck is replaced. Phase 2 will open one lane of traffic on the north side of the bridge and one lane of traffic on the south side of the bridge while the middle of the bridge deck is replaced. The final phases will have traffic on the north side of the bridge while the south side of the bridge deck is replaced, and the structure is widened.
Timeline
The Dartmouth Bridge project has been delayed due to 3rd party construction delays related to the project. Currently, contractors are focused on finishing the substructure units on the south side of the bridge. Once this phase is complete, the installation of girders and the final stages involving the deck, sidewalk, and rail can proceed. Delays stemming from third-party utilities have extended the anticipated project completion date from summer 2024 to winter 2025.

Dartmouth traffic has now been phased to the north side of the bridge while crews remove the deck on the south lane. While the deck is being removed crews will construct new piers and extensions to each abutment to accommodate three new girders on the south side which will widen the bridge by fifteen feet. After the new substructure units are constructed and girders are set, the final phase to the deck will be poured. Localized lane closures can be expected over the next couple months while Xcel transitions overhead powerlines to underground and crews work to replace sidewalks on all corners of the bridge.

Dartmouth Avenue will be closed in both directions for construction of the bridge on Thursday, October 19. New traffic patterns will be installed, and traffic will continue Friday using the northernmost lane for westbound traffic and the southernmost lane for eastbound traffic. This traffic pattern will be utilized throughout the weekend. On Monday, October 23, the westbound lane of traffic will be closed during the week for up to three weeks while crews install a utility bridge on the north side of Dartmouth Bridge. Demolition and construction will commence on the middle portion of the bridge while the utility bridge is being installed.

Dartmouth Bridge over the South Platte River just west of Santa Fe Drive will be closed for construction from August 18 to August 22. The contractor will be pouring new concrete on the north half of the deck. Traffic on the bridge vibrates the deck such that the concrete would not cure properly, so the bridge will be closed during the bridge deck pour, and for enough time to allow the concrete to cure properly.
