Background Information

The City of Englewood's Department of Parks, Recreation, Library and Golf strives to maintain the best parks and open spaces in the metro area to meet the needs and issues of the community.

In March 2017, Englewood City Council adopted the Parks and Recreation Master Plan to serve as a road map for future park development/redevelopment and provide a balance of facilities, amenities and recreation programs for the next 10 years.

In July 2023, the Department of Parks, Recreation, Library and Golf updated the 2017 Master Plan Recommendations Sections (Chapter 3) to outline key improvements to Englewood's parks, opens spaces and facilities to meet the current needs and issues of the community.

Timeline

Phase 1

Two Arapahoe County Open Space grants were secured to start the initial improvements at Bate Logan Park. Construction on Phase 1 began in fall 2023, and included a new pavilion, restroom, ADA improvements for pathways and parking lot and landscape improvements.

Phase 2

The city received another Arapahoe County Open Space Grant for Phase 2 renovations at Bates Logan Park. The current playground and basketball court will flip locations. A new basketball court will be poured along with a new playground installed. These improvements will facilitate increased ADA accessibility and create a dynamic, fun and inclusive space for all park visitors.

Phase 3

Plans to expand facilities at Bates Logan Park with the creation of a new pump track, as well as a bicycle playground and skills course and bocce ball court.

Bates Logan Park History

One of four major parks (Centennial, Cushing, Bates/Logan and Jason) that was developed in cooperation with the Department of Housing and Urban Development through federal funds under the Open Space Land program. Bates Logan Park was the first park to be developed in spring 1968.

    The basketball court at Bates Logan Park is scheduled for reconstruction later this fall due to surface issues identified during testing.

    After the new basketball court was completed, the surface did not meet required durability standards, failing pressure tests and showing cracking from underneath. To ensure long-term durability and safety, the court will need to be redone. The reconstruction will not incur any additional costs to the city.

    The court is safe to use in the meantime and will remain open for play until reconstruction begins. The replacement work is planned for later this fall and is expected to require a closure of approximately two to four weeks. All other park amenities are expected to remain open and accessible throughout the construction period.

    While this may be disappointing, the goal is to deliver a high-quality court that will last for years to come.

    Progress Update for Bates Logan Park!

    • Work on the playground at Bates Logan has resumed after the snowstorms. All play structures have been installed and look great! The installer is currently finishing up drain work and cosmetic tasks.
    • The basketball court is on track to be formed and poured the first week of December, weather permitting.

    Phase two is underway with the layout for the new playground complete along with drilling for the equipment. Playground equipment has arrived, and installation is in progress The playground will feature many upgrades for play including an ADA-swing and merry-go-round for wheelchairs.

    Dirt work is ongoing for the basketball court, and the final grade will be established this week.

    Major dirt work has begun on the slope, which includes ramp, boulder prep, footers and more!

    The Englewood Parks, Recreation, Library and Golf Department has been awarded a $600,000 grant from the Arapahoe County Open Spaces Fund for Phase 3 of Bates Logan Park renovations! 👏

    Phase 3 includes two bike skills parks, pump track, bocce ball court and 12 new trees! Construction is planned to start once Phase 2 is completed. We are thrilled to continue to invest in our parks to make Englewood a thriving place for everyone to enjoy!
