Project: South Broadway Complete Streets

Status: Design Phase

Description:

The City of Englewood has selected HDR to design significant pedestrian and cyclist improvements on two parallel multimodal corridors, known as the couplet, consisting of S Broadway and S Sherman Street. The primary objective of this project is to enhance safety, accessibility, and attractiveness for pedestrians and transit users on Broadway. This will be achieved by implementing ADA improvements, upgrading bus stop amenities, improving lighting and target landscaping along S Broadway. Simultaneously, the project aims to promote active transportation, specifically biking, on Sherman Street, providing a safer alternative to S Broadway for cyclists. This project aims to redirect bicycle traffic from Broadway to Sherman Street by installing on-street biking facilities and traffic calming features. This project aligns with the broader objective of encouraging pedestrian and transit use on S Broadway while making Sherman Street a preferred route for bicyclists due to reduced traffic and slower speeds. Additionally, this project adds wayfinding to RTD transit stops and various bike routes and trails. The ultimate aim of the project is to promote the use of public transit and make it easier for cyclists to navigate Englewood.

This project is a collaborative effort with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and is estimated to cost approximately $7.5M for design and construction. The City cost-share of this project is 12% of the total budget.

Construction Outreach

Community engagement is a key component of this project, and limited outreach efforts will be conducted to engage with stakeholders, residents, and businesses within the project area. The goal of this outreach is to involve the community in finding solutions to mitigate construction impacts.

Construction Schedule

Project design is just getting underway and is anticipated to be completed in Late to Early 2025. Construction is scheduled to begin in Early 2025, and completed in Fall of 2025. This is an estimated timeline and detailed construction schedules can’t be provided until construction bids are received and a construction contractor is selected in early 2025.

Construction Impacts

Traffic control and partial lane closures will be in place on South Broadway between Belleview and Hampden Avenue during the Summer of 2025. Minor impacts and delays to Traffic on Broadway are anticipated.

Sidewalk closures may be necessary for construction along South Broadway and S Sherman Street. In the event segments of sidewalk must be closed, alternative routes will be provided to ensure pedestrian connectivity and access to businesses along South Broadway.

The heavy equipment being used will create construction noise. Construction hours will be limited to Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Limited night and weekend work may be needed under special circumstances.

Materials, equipment, and debris will need to be delivered to and removed from the construction area.
