Program Overview

Englewood Utilities Lead Reduction Program is a multi-year program to remove all lead service lines and replace them with copper lines. Safe drinking water is our top priority, and Englewood Utilities is taking significant steps in the coming years to eliminate lead pipes from the water system. While water is currently lead-free when it leaves the water treatment facility and travels through the distribution system, it can come in contact with historic lead service line or plumbing throughout your home. If your home was constructed before 1960, you may have a lead service line providing water to your home. As a part of the Lead Reduction Program, Englewood Utilities will replace the entire lead service line from the water main in the street to just inside your home with a copper service line.

Your Water Service Line

Your water service line is the pipe that carries water from the water main in the street to just inside of your home. The service line between the water main and the curb stop is owned by the city. The remainder of the service line, from the curb stop to inside the home, is owned by the property owner. See the figures below.

Program Updates December 2023:

Englewood Utilities initiated its Lead Reduction Program, a multi-year program to eliminate lead service lines in the water system. In 2023, the Inventory Phase of the Program was completed. There are estimated to be up to 3,000 lead service lines in the water system that will require replacement in the coming years. Replacements are anticipated to begin in mid-2024. The Englewood water system continues to test below Federal lead levels.

Initiated final design of the City Ditch Piping Project that will convert the remaining 2.5 miles of open channel sections between Chatfield Reservoir and the Allen Water Treatment Plant to buried pipe. This project will improve the source water quality and resiliency of the water delivery system. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2024.

Eliminated dead-ends and installed new fire hydrants for flushing at four (4) locations within the distribution system to improve water quality and address fire flow deficiencies. Approximately 1,900 linear feet of pipe were replaced.

Initiated a Solids Removal and Handling Improvements Project at the Allen Water Treatment Plant to modernize an outdated treatment process. This project is one of the many steps the City is taking to improve the taste, odor and hardness of the drinking water. The project is currently in preliminary design and is expected to be completed in 2025.

Utilities staff developed a valve maintenance program to operate one third of the valves in the City’s water distribution system each year. This will ensure that each valve is operated at least once every three years in accordance with industry standards.
