On April 5, 2021, the Englewood City Council approved the City's first Sustainability Plan. Since then, the city has hired a Sustainability Coordinator, Mel Englund, and has updated the plan for 2022-2025. The updated plan has nine goal areas (goals not placed in any specific order of importance):

  • Air Quality Education: Improved air quality to protect public and environmental health.
  • Built Infrastructure: Infrastructure that is built and/or operates in ways that eliminate or minimize harm to the environment and increase the health and well-being of its occupants.
  • Climate Action: A community that addresses current and future environmental, economic, and social climate vulnerabilities through implementing climate adaptation and mitigation projects and practices.
  • Energy: Programs, policies, and initiatives designed to encourage renewable, affordable, and accessible energy.
  • Natural Environment: Protection of our natural environment.
  • Sustainable Business and Green Workforce: A community that promotes sustainable business practices and the advancement of the green workforce.
  • Waste and Recycling: Increase recycling and composting efforts and diversion of waste.
  • Water Protection: Protection of water resources, including rivers and streams.

*Note: Clean and Connected Transportation goal moved to the Transportation section of the Strategic Plan.

The city defines sustainability as "A city that stewards its resources for the benefit of current and future generations." This work can't be accomplished alone, which is why we're committed to keeping Englewood residents informed and updated about the work being done in this area as well as capturing feedback on what residents find important and ways to constantly improve. Additionally, we want to highlight the continuous efforts of the city's Sustainability Commission (formerly Keep Englewood Beautiful) and ways the public can get involved.
