Overview
In August 2023, the City of Englewood kicked off the 2023 Concrete Utility Project. The primary objective of the project is two-fold. The first objective is to repair damaged concrete, which might provide trip hazards, along a property’s frontage through a regular fee-based funding mechanism that was introduced in 1997. The annual Concrete Utility Program completes these concrete repairs on behalf of property owners who pay into the Concrete Utility Program—approximately 94% of all eligible property owners participate in the program.
The second objective of the project is to improve accessibility in the right-of-way and to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by upgrading ADA ramps to adhere to the latest guidance from the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The 2023 Concrete Utility Project’s annual project targeted the northern portion of Zone 1, Zone 5, and the Malley Senior Center this year. The funding for upgrade to sidewalks and the addition of pedestrian safety fixtures at the Malley Senior Center was provided through a Grant with DRCOG and folded into the Concrete Utility Project to expedite construction.
The project is anticipated to be completed by October 6, 2023.
Scope
This project will include removal and replacement of deteriorated concrete (sidewalks, curbwalk, cross pans, and ADA ramps) and the patch back of asphalt adjacent to these replacements. Tripping hazards at the Malley Senior Center will be removed along the sidewalk, installation of a concrete bulb out and the installation of rectangular rapid-flashing beacon for safe crossing of pedestrians across E. Girard Avenue are all part of the project.
Contractor
Silva Construction, Inc.
Project Cost
Malley Senior Center Pedestrian Improvements: $333,639.50
DRCOG Grant for Malley Senior Center: $220,000
2023 Concrete Utility: $1,045,281.00
Construction Impacts
Sidewalk closures and ADA pedestrian ramps may be necessary for sidewalk repair. In the event segments of the sidewalk must be closed, alternative routes will be provided.
The heavy equipment being used will create construction noise. Construction hours will be limited to Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Limited night and weekend work may be needed under special circumstances. Materials, equipment, and debris will need to be delivered to and removed from the construction area.
